When you learn boating, sailing the boat should not be your only priority. You should also know how to read weather so you’ll know when to safely sail a boat. A skipper should always keep in mind that before sailing, the first thing to do is to check the weather. Though a VHF radio is the best Cloud Reader and weather checker, it would also be better if a skipper can read the clouds to see signs of what the weather will be since it can always change every now and then. Clouds and its direction can show weather changes that are about to happen. It would be helpful to remember the following cloud types and their definition.
A Guide To Becoming A Cloud Reader
Genus-type of low-level cloud that can have noticeable vertical development and clearly defined edges. Cumulo- means “heap” or “pile” in Latin.
Genus of low-level cloud characterized by horizontal layering with a uniform base, as opposed to convective or cumuliform clouds that are formed by rising thermals. More specifically, the term stratus is used to describe flat, hazy, featureless clouds of low altitude varying in color from dark gray to nearly white. The word “stratus” comes from the Latin prefix “strato-“, meaning “layer”.
A cloud that produces precipitation. Usually, the precipitation reaches the ground as rain, hail, snow, or sleet. Falling precipitation may evaporate as virga. Rain comes out of nimbus clouds and this is called precipitation. Nimbus is a Latin word meaning rain cloud or rain storm.
Be A Cloud Reader!
Now that you have learned about the clouds, remember that it is essential to read the cloud before sailing. We don’t want to be in trouble, do we? Still, it is better to take your journey on the sea on a sunny day!
If you can’t remember the cloud names and formations, you can watch clouds for two weather situations that show a high probability of storm which is a lowering ceiling which means that the height of the cloud is getting lower and lower.
